Q: What is happening between Hendricks Regional Health Brownsburg Hospital and Anthem?

A: Hendricks has worked diligently over the last nine months to reach an agreement with Anthem so patients in Brownsburg with Anthem insurance have access to the affordable, high-quality care they deserve. Unfortunately, Anthem does not share our desire and has not negotiated in good faith. As a result of Anthem’s unwillingness to work with us, Brownsburg Hospital is now an out-of-network provider for Anthem members – employer-sponsored, marketplace, and Medicare and Medicaid patients with Anthem as their primary health insurance plan.

We held claims as long as we could, but Anthem forced our hand. Patients may begin receiving bills for the following services beginning June 1:

  • Cardiac Testing
  • Radiology Services
  • Mammography
  • Rehabilitation Services (Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy)
  • Any Inpatient Care

This negotiation does not affect services received from our Immediate Care and Lab Services, along with primary care physicians and specialists located at Brownsburg Hospital.

It is important to know that these contract negotiations only impact care received at Brownsburg Hospital. All other Hendricks Regional Health facilities are still in-network with Anthem. Anthem patients are still able to visit all other Hendricks Regional Health facilities at in-network rates.

Q: Are these negotiations necessary?

A: Yes. Our contracts with insurers are not just simple business arrangements. They are the foundation of our ability to provide advanced and innovative care to our patients. A contract that fails to provide us with fair payment and contract language erodes our ability to improve the health of our patients and undermines our health system’s long-term financial health.

Additionally, without a fair contract, we are limited in our ability to invest in the latest technologies and afford patients and their families the modern facilities we provide at Brownsburg Hospital. We have a long-standing, collaborative relationship with Anthem, and our goal is to work with them in good faith to find a mutually beneficial resolution.

Q: What does the contract cover?

A: We are negotiating a new contract with Anthem that covers the care we provide to Anthem’s members with commercial (employer-sponsored and marketplace) health plans, and Medicare and Medicaid patients with Anthem as their primary health insurance at Brownsburg Hospital.

Q: Which Anthem health plans are affected by these negotiations?

A: These negotiations affect all patients with an Anthem commercial (employer-sponsored and marketplace) health plan, and Medicare and Medicaid patients with Anthem as their primary health plan.

Q: Can patients continue to visit their physician?

A: Yes. Hendricks Regional Health Brownsburg Hospital physicians, as well as Immediate Care services, are not affected by our negotiations and are still considered in-network. You can continue to visit your physician’s office the same way you always have.

Q: Will patients begin receiving bills?

A: We held claims as long as we could, but Anthem forced our hand. Patients may begin receiving bills for the following services beginning June 1:

  • Cardiac Testing
  • Emergency Department
  • Radiology Services
  • Mammography
  • Rehabilitation Services (Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy)
  • Any Inpatient Care

The following services are considered in-network for Anthem members.

  • Physician Offices
  • Laboratory Services, beginning June 1
  • Immediate Care Center

Patients will not be held financially responsible until we understand how Anthem will handle claims. We are working diligently to have the costs put no undue burden on our patients. Patients are encouraged to carefully examine their Explanation of Benefits, and let us know if they have any questions. We know you will be concerned, and we are doing everything we can to help navigate the situation by continuing to advocate on your behalf to Anthem. We also encourage you to share your feelings with Anthem, and urge them to add Brownsburg Hospital as an in-network provider.

Q: How are patients with Anthem coverage from another state or a federal plan affected?

A: Anthem is a Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan. Therefore, it is possible that patients with some out-of-state and Federal Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans could be affected by this issue. You should call the number on the back of your Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurance card to understand potential impacts to your costs for care at Brownsburg Hospital.

Q: Will patients need to find a new primary care physician?

A: The contract negotiations do not affect physician offices or Immediate Care and Lab services, which are already considered in-network for all Anthem members.

Q: Can patients use the Emergency Department? Will it cost more?

A: Despite the fact that Hendricks Regional Health Brownsburg Hospital is currently out-of-network for Anthem members, you should always visit the nearest Emergency Department for emergency care. All patients with Anthem insurance will receive emergency care at Brownsburg Hospital until you are stabilized. Under applicable law, copayments or coinsurance for out-of-network emergency services cannot exceed the copayments or coinsurance that are applicable to in-network emergency services. If your health plan has a deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, or other cost-sharing requirement that generally applies to out-of-network benefits, the requirement may also be applicable to emergency services provided out-of-network. Once stable, you can choose to continue care with Brownsburg Hospital at out-of-network rates, or be transferred to a facility that is in-network with Anthem, such as the Hendricks Regional Health Danville Hospital.

Q: What does it mean for patients to “pay out-of-network rates”?

A: While all insurance plans are different, receiving care from an out-of-network physician or at an out-of-network hospital can sometimes cost more for our patients. We encourage you to call the customer service number on the back of your Anthem insurance card for more details.

Q: Does Brownsburg Hospital accept other insurance carriers, and can patients switch health insurance plans?
